Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Group SHEQ Manager / Head of Safety to lead and oversee the Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) function across our clients operations in Southern Africa and other African countries. This senior leadership role is pivotal in ensuring SHEQ governance, compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement across 15 operations in South Africa, as well as operations in Botswana, Namibia, and other African countries, supporting a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing SHEQ strategies, policies, systems, and standards that promote a strong safety culture, operational excellence, legal compliance, and sustainable business practices. This role requires regular travel to various operational sites and reports directly to Executive Management.
Responsibilities
Develop and drive the Group SHEQ strategy and annual objectives.
Ensure compliance with mining, occupational health and safety, environmental, and quality legislation across multiple jurisdictions.
Lead SHEQ audits, inspections, incident investigations, and risk management initiatives.
Monitor SHEQ performance and provide executive-level reporting and recommendations.
Manage and support SHEQ teams across all operations, ensuring alignment with company objectives and client requirements.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives and ensure alignment with ISO standards and other relevant frameworks.
Promote a proactive safety culture and strengthen leadership accountability at all levels.
Provide strategic guidance and leadership to site-based SHEQ teams, fostering collaboration and operational excellence.
Qualifications
Relevant degree or diploma in Safety Management, Environmental Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Professional SHEQ qualifications and registrations will be advantageous.
Minimum of 10 years' SHEQ management experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within mining, contract mining, construction, or heavy industry.
Extensive knowledge of the Mines Health & Safety Act and relevant South African mining and occupational health and safety legislation, with exposure to operations in other African countries.
Proven experience managing multi-site SHEQ functions and large workforces.
Strong leadership, stakeholder management, auditing, and strategic planning skills.
Demonstrated ability to drive a proactive safety culture and implement world-class SHEQ practices.
