Overview
We are seeking a Project Director to lead the successful delivery of a large-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Project. This project is critical in supplying power to three major pump stations in Limpopo. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and commercial acumen to ensure the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and safety. This is a senior-level role with full accountability for the project's performance and alignment with strategic and governance frameworks.
Responsibilities
As the Project Director, you will be responsible for:
Strategic Leadership & Governance
Establishing and implementing the overall project strategy, governance structure, and reporting processes.
Chairing the Project Steering Committee (SteerCo) to ensure transparent communication and decision-making.
Enforcing strict adherence to NEC contract conditions, project scope, and performance obligations.
Approving and controlling the project budget, resource plan, and capital expenditure.
Providing regular and accurate reporting of project progress, risks, KPIs, and financial forecasts to the executive committee and board.
Commercial & Contract Management
Managing full P&L responsibility for project delivery, including cost, margin, and cash-flow management.
Leading contract management in accordance with NEC principles, including early warnings, change management, and claims prevention.
Representing the company in contractual negotiations, disputes, and arbitration proceedings.
Mitigating commercial risks and identifying opportunities for value creation.
Technical & System Integration Oversight
Providing high-level technical oversight across all disciplines, including civil, electrical, mechanical, control, and communications.
Ensuring proper design governance, change control, and interface management throughout the project lifecycle.
Validating and approving major design changes in consultation with the COO and Engineering Manager.
Championing engineering best practices, safety standards, and environmental and social management systems.
Leadership & Organizational Performance
Building and leading a high-performance, multidisciplinary project team.
Ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities across all functional clusters.
Providing mentorship and guidance to team members to support professional growth.
Managing crises, conflicts, and community-related issues with composure and authority.
Client, Stakeholder & External Engagement
Acting as the primary executive liaison with the client, funders, utilities, and regulatory authorities.
Managing multi-stakeholder environments and competing interests diplomatically.
Overseeing community engagement and communication strategies to maintain local goodwill and project continuity.
Execution Excellence & Risk Control
Driving an integrated risk management framework across commercial, technical, and operational domains.
Embedding safety, quality, and environmental leadership as core project principles.
Utilizing digital dashboards, KPIs, and data-driven tools for proactive monitoring and reporting.
Executive Influence & Business Contribution
Translating complex project realities into clear strategic insights for executive decision-making.
Contributing to the company’s broader business strategy and project pipeline through lessons learned and innovations.
Representing the company in the renewable energy and infrastructure sectors through excellence in delivery and relationship management.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial).
7-10 years’ experience managing large, multidisciplinary EPC projects (≥ 20 MW Solar PV or hybrid systems).
Proven expertise in NEC contract management and stakeholder governance.
Demonstrated success in managing the financial performance of large-scale infrastructure projects (budget > R500 million).
Working knowledge of renewable technologies, BESS integration, grid interconnection, and water infrastructure systems.
PMP, PrEng, or MBA qualification is advantageous.
Willingness to travel and maintain site presence as required.
